U can visit Minnehaha Falls Split rock light house and Spirit mountain.. there are good beaches on the way up north

About 40 minutes away from Duluth is Gooseberry Falls State Park. Falls are really nice and worth visiting.
Just 3 hours away is one of the most romantic and iconic place which is aptly called "The covered bridges capital of the world".

There are 31 covered bridges - all using the TRUSS design and made of Burr oak. Beautiful fall colors frame the bridges and there is minor and major hiking around them.
This one county Parke in Indiana has 31 covered bridges because it has that many creeks!
Here is the proposed itinerary
8 AM- Leave Chicagoland
11 AM- Arrive at Turkey Run State Park ( 12 noon local time)
11 AM- 2 PM- Enjoy hiking and fall colors in the park
2PM- 3PM- Have lunch at a nearby restaurant- Up the Creek
3PM- 5PM- Take in as many bridges as possible. We did 7
5PM- Donuts and coffee at the wheelhouse donut shop
8PM- Arrive back
